Joseph had two sons in Egypt, Mannasseh and Ephraim, who were adopted by Jacob and called ‘half-tribes’.
The twelve tribes of Israel, as they are generally referred to, are the tribes allotted land in Canaan.
They are: Reuben, Simeon, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Benjamin, Mannasseh and Ephraim.
Levi were the priestly tribe who lived amongst and served the other twelve tribes.
